There's Nothing Fishy About Fish Oil

By Dr. Mark Stengler, ND

If there's one supplement that benefits virtually everyone, it's fish oil. The fatty acids in fish oil are members of a family of fats called omega-3s, which have been found to be helpful in so many clinical conditions that at least six books tout their benefits and uses.

The two omega-3 fats found naturally in cold-water fish, such as salmon, are the same ones found in the Bottom Line NutritionalsTM Natural Healing Daily Wellness Pack—EPA and DHA.

EPA and DHA have been studied for their beneficial effects on inflammation, recovery from injury, depression, cardiovascular health, skin, joints and diabetes. Studies have shown a correlation between behavior and mood problems (from aggression to depression) and extremely low blood levels of omega-3s. Large doses of these fatty acids are currently being studied at Harvard University for their role in combating some forms of depression. And a great deal of research has shown that omega-3s are great for the heart.

One of the many benefits of omega-3s is that they are anti-inflammatory—and inflammation has been found to be a component of every major degenerative disease, including Alzheimer's, arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. For example, omega-3 levels in the blood are one of the best predictors of sudden heart attack. Those with the highest risk for heart attack have the lowest levels of omega-3s. In Britain, heart attack survivors are now prescribed fish oil supplements for life, in keeping with the guidelines of the British National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Many physicians in the US and abroad consider supplementation with omega-3 fats an important part of nutritional treatment for diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.

It seems our grandparents were ahead of their time with their omnipresent bottles of cod liver oil. Whether in liquid or capsule form, omega-3s are "good for what ails you."
