Keeping Your Body Toxin-Free In A Toxic World
By Dr. Mark Stengler, ND
Our world is full of toxins, and even the most health-conscious person is exposed to many on a daily basis, both natural and man-made. Fortunately, our bodies come equipped with a system to eliminate waste products and foreign compounds that, if allowed to build up, could cause toxicity, illness and a general lack of well-being. The cells of the liver and kidneys, as well as the bloodstream, participate in a process known as detoxification. But to do this job properly, the body needs nutritional support.
On a regular basis, our bodies eliminate waste materials generated by normal function. However, our bodies consider many chemical compounds to be waste products that also need to be purged, whether they come from prescription medications, pollutants in the air or water, secondhand smoke, food additives, pesticides or any of the other multitude of chemicals to which we're regularly exposed. The more exposure to these substances, the harder our bodies have to work to stay clean, and the more help we need to do the job. Getting rid of them in an efficient way helps limit our exposure to potential disease.
The good news is that certain foods, extracts, juices and herbs have been found to turbocharge the process of detoxificationhelping the body excrete what doesn't belong or is no longer needed. Some of the most effective detoxifiers include nutrients found in plants, such as wheat grass, chlorella and spirulinatheir high chlorophyll content makes them some of nature's great purifiers. Herbs such as milk thistle, dandelion and turmeric help support the liver and kidneys in their function as filter, recycler and waste transfer station. Intake of a healthful combination of detoxifiers can lead to efficient digestion, unfettered elimination, clear skin, bright eyes and sweet breath. These detoxifiers are difficult to include in your daily diet, but easily taken in the form of a supplement.
