B Good To Yourself
By Dr. Mark Stengler, ND
The B vitamins are critical to every cell in our bodies. They are integral to cell growth and division... help the body manage energy stores... boost immune system function... and ensure communication throughout the nervous system, in particular for mental function. Most B vitamins are easy to get via foods or everyday B-complex supplements. Then there's B-12.
Vitamin B-12, which is recognized as a vitamin that promotes longevity, is one of the most difficult vitamins to acquire through dietnot so much because it is rare in the food supply, but because it's difficult to digest and absorb. The digestive challenges of B-12 make B-12 deficiency very common in seniors, which can create assorted problems. Since even a low-level vitamin B-12 deficiency can worsen dementia, watching B-12 levels is critical for all. The good news is that supplementation can help with poor mental functioning, as well as energy levels and fatigue.
A natural form of B-12 found in food is methylcobalamin, which is believed to be one of the best-absorbed and highest-quality forms of vitamin B-12 for supplements. Methylcobalamin can be found in foods such as shellfish, beef liver and other forms of beef, and in certain high-quality supplements, including the Bottom Line NutritionalsTM Natural Healing Daily Wellness Pack vitamin/mineral formula. However, some supplement companies use the lesser-quality and more poorly absorbed variety cyanocobalamin, so you must read the label carefully when buying supplements.
Frequent consumption of certain refined foods decreases the amount of B vitamins we get from our diet, making supplementation all the more important. Unlike some other supplements on the market, the Bottom Line NutritionalsTM Natural Healing Daily Wellness Pack uses activated forms of most of the B vitamins that allow better, more complete utilization.
